Mississippi Investigates Unlawful Factory Home Installers

Thank author of this post/comment

Purchasing a home is probably the biggest decision any of us will ever make. While prices across the country are still coming down, homes for many remain financially out of sight. Filling the void of economically priced housing, however, is the factory built home. Manufactured in a factory and delivered to your lot, this is an affordable alternative in housing.

Like any other industry, the manufactured homes business has had its share of problems. Recently in Mississippi regulators from the Mississippi Fire Marshal's Office filed charges in eight counties relating to the installation and transportation of factory built homes. The charges stem from individuals and companies installing homes without a license.

In 2009 Mississippi passed House Bill 1435 that calls for 100 percent inspection of every factory built home used for human habitation that has been installed in the state. Prior to passage of the bill there were only six trained inspectors in the state. Today there are almost thirty inspectors reporting to the State Fire Marshal's office.

Since August of last year the Fire Code Enforcement has conducted over 600 inspections of factory built homes. A state license is required to transport and install a factory built home in Mississippi. To date eleven individuals have been charged in eight counties in the state and seven have been arrested.

The licensing violation is a general misdemeanor and carries a fine of up to $1,000 and a year in jail. Those arrested so far have been ordered to pay fines and restitution to the State Fire Marshal's Office for the inspection fee.

If you have a question concerning your factory built home in Mississippi you should contact the State Fire Marshal's Office. The phone number is 1-888-648-0877. A consumer should always be alert to inappropriate activities and report any suspected problems immediately.

If you are an installer or transporter and have questions about licensing in Mississippi you should also contact the State Fire Marshal's Office at the above number. Or, you can visit their website and download an application.
